PAUL STAMATI STAGES SIGNIFICANT EXHIBITION OF ART DECO SCULPTURE
AT THE MANHATTAN ART & ANTIQUES CENTER
OCTOBER 1ST THRU DECEMBER 30TH

Paul Stamati Gallery, #89 & 90 at The Manhattan Art & Antiques Center announces the opening of an exhibition of significant works from the Art Deco period. Twenty sculptures dating from the early 1920’s through the 1930’s will be on view and available for purchase from Thursday, October 1st through Thursday, December 30th. The collection represents works of such artists as D.H.Chiparus, Raymond Delamarre, Joe Descomps, Marcel Bouraine, Ary Bitter, Gaston Contesse, Alexandre Ouline, J. Lormier, and A.R Philippe.

Some of the exhibition highlights at Paul Stamati Gallery include Persée et Andromède, signed Raymond Delamarre. This brown patinated bronze sculpture, created in 1930, depicts the fascinating and famous Greek myth in which Perseus slays the monster to save Andromeda. The graceful repetition of curves on Perseus’ cape and shield, the horse’s shoulder, head and tale and in the serpent’s body is characteristic of the work of Delamarre. This sculpture is a smaller, earlier version of another by award-winning master sculptor, Raymond Delamarre that stands more than ten feet high at the entrance to Leo Lagrange de Vincennes Stadium in Paris. It was commissioned by the city in 1935.
“Archer Woman”, a silvered bronze sculpture, signed Joe Descomps, features a young woman striking a graceful pose as she clasps her hair with one hand and gazes toward her other hand in which she holds a bow. The beautiful and graceful curves of the female form are a recurrent motif of the artists of this period.
“Dancer” is a dramatic bronze sculpture with silver, gold and green patina resting on a marble and onyx base, signed J. Lormier. This highly stylized dancer’s figure emphasizes the contrast between the arched forms created by the dancers pose with the triangular onyx and marble shapes in the base. The juxtaposition of complementary geometric shapes is often seen in the Art Deco style.
Paul Stamati, gallery owner, is an expert in the Art Deco movement. He has more than twenty years experience. His gallery is replete with one of the largest collections of
Lalique chandeliers in the world, as well as other beautiful Art Deco chandeliers, wall sconces, fire screens, floor and table lamps, and furniture.
Paul Stamati details how he became interested in adding sculpture to his collection in the following paragraph:
“ I always had a special connection to the bronze sculpture of the 1920’s. As an Art Nouveau dealer in my earlier days on Madison Avenue, I developed a deep appreciation for the works of Chiparus and other chryselephantine masters, as well as the paintings of Louis Icart. In the last few years I have gradually incorporated more furniture design into my collection and this new sculpture group has evolved as part of my intent to recapture the Art Deco interior. Sculpture conveys warmth and character in a contemporary interior. At the same time these pieces provide a contextual framework for the Art Deco movement in France. They represent the various influences prevalent at the time and enhance a deeper understanding of the popular tastes and preoccupations of the period. The selected works of Chiparus, Descomps, Bouraine and Delamarre from my collection epitomize the style elements of Art Deco and highlight the interest in ancient mythology, Eastern cultures, the stage and ballet. They are symbolic of the 1920’s appetite for elegance and exoticism.”
