SHAHIN KHALILI OF PALACE GALLERIES RETURNS TO
THE MANHATTAN ART & ANTIQUES CENTER
AFTER A 29 YEAR HIATUS

Palace Galleries, one of the original tenants at THE MANHATTAN ART & ANTIQUES CENTER, has returned after twenty-nine years. Since 1970 Shahin Khalili of Palace Galleries has acquired a reputation for providing a collection of distinctive quality art and antiques to museums, private collectors, designers and dealers worldwide. They specialize in 17th to 19th century European and Asian art including Islamic and Roman antiquities. Palace Galleries is located in Gallery #62 at the foot of the spiral staircase on the first concourse.
The diverse and important collections at Palace Galleries include paintings, sculpture, furniture, porcelains, art glass, bronzes, Persian miniatures, religious artifacts, metal works, military decorations, marble, silver and the list goes on.
One of the most unique and important finds at Palace Galleries is a set of four French Art Deco glass and bronze ballroom lamps, possibly the only set of this style of hanging lamps in existence. They were uniquely designed for the Philadelphia Municipal Auditorium and constructed in France in 1931. They are of exceptional design quality with a mixture of frosted glass panels and medallions, crystal sprays, drops and beading with bronze frames. They measure 14 feet in height.
Another distinctive antique is a highly stylized terra cotta horse head, created during the Han Dynasty in China, the second great Imperial era, considered a period of immense learning and creativity. It was during this era that paper was first developed. The horse head dates somewhere between the first and third century. The head contains some traces of polychrome that at one time may have covered it entirely. Its height is 22”, width 12”, depth 10”.
Among the fine collection of important paintings is a historically significant painting by Conrad Freyberg that depicts the defeat of the French forces at the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian war. General Field Marshal Prince Freiderich Karl of Prussia accepts the unconditional surrender of the French army near Metz by Marshal Bazaine, on October 29th, 1870. It is painted in oil on canvas, signed and dated Conrad Freyberg, 1876. At one time this great painting was in the private collection of H.R.H. Prince Freiderich Karl. It measures 104” X 48”.
When asked how he feels about returning to The Manhattan Art & Antique Center, Shahin replies, “I have enjoyed this business for nearly forty years and have occupied many different locations but The Center is the place of many happy memories. Aside from the fact that The Center contains an extraordinary eclectic collection of antique treasures, it is also a social experience for me. Many of the tenants are either relatives or friends.”
