SUNDIAL TAKES OVER TIME GALLERY
AT THE MANHATTAN ART & ANTIQUES CENTER
Lawrence, Maria and Steven Thompson who had been part owners of Time Gallery at The Manhattan Art & Antiques Center at 1050 Second Ave. in New York City for fourteen years have assumed total ownership and renamed the gallery Sundial NYC. The new gallery will continue to provide collectors, designers and dealers with the most extensive and diverse selection of 17th through early 20th century European clocks and barometers with examples ranging from the most elaborate 19th century tallcase clocks to the most simple miniature carriage clocks.
Unlike many other decorative antiques, the clock has always been a delicate combination of form and function. It not only had to be aesthetically pleasing; it had to function with precision. The fabrication of a single clock involved the cooperation of the clock maker with many specialists such as bronzers, hand makers, movement makers, case makers, etc. The result was a decorative object that kept time.
Sundial NYC has some of the most original and extraordinary time pieces available anywhere. Each of their clocks is in excellent condition and sold as a working time piece. The movements are serviced and the cases are always properly restored.
What determines the value of these rare old time pieces? Steve Thompson of Sundial maintains,Rarity, condition, quality, provenance, demand and originality are some of the factors considered in evaluating the fair market value of a time piece. While all are significant, special consideration is placed upon originality and condition. The value might be in the case, the accuracy of the movement or a combination of the two. Occasionally a piece is not particularly rare but is in high demand. Often it is just the best example weve seen with great castings and exceptional finishing work.
