THE OLYMPIA SWIVEL CHAIR
Smith & Watson, a manufacturer of fine, meticulously crafted English antique reproductions is celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2007. To commemorate this birthday, they have assembled The Centennial Collection, an impressive group of their most significant pieces throughout the years. A family owned and operated business; they have a rich history of working with the most respected designers on a wide range of important projects. Many interesting stories are associated with these assignments.
One of my favorite stories is that of the Olympia Swivel Chair. Smith & Watson adapted this chair from a four-legged George III antique armchair found at the Olympia Antiques Fair in London. The very first week that the chair was shown, Mark Hampton, working on the White House for the first President Bush, spotted the prototype. He borrowed the chair for the oval office where it remained for the duration of Bush’s term and throughout much of Clinton’s presidency. Pictures of the oval office at that time show the chair.
The chair frame is hand carved in antiqued mahogany and may be upholstered in one of the fine Smith and Watson leathers or COM. Height and pitch are fully adjustable. Brass nail head trim is optional.
